Battle of Tarsonis
The Battle of Tarsonis explained: Mengsk's psi-emitter strategy, the collapse of the Confederacy, Kerrigan's abandonment, and the Dominion's rise.
What was the Battle of Tarsonis?
The Battle of Tarsonis was the decisive campaign that broke the Terran Confederacy and cleared the way for Arcturus Mengsk to establish the Terran Dominion.
It is one of the most important events in the entire StarCraft timeline because its consequences extend far beyond terran politics.
What was Mengsk’s plan?
Mengsk and the Sons of Korhal use psi emitters to draw the zerg toward Tarsonis, the Confederate capital.
The tactic succeeds in destroying the Confederacy’s position, but it does so by deliberately turning an alien invasion into a weapon against a populated human world.
That choice defines how several characters come to view Mengsk afterward.
What happened to Sarah Kerrigan?
Sarah Kerrigan takes part in the operation as one of Mengsk’s most powerful agents. When her position is overrun by the zerg, Jim Raynor argues that she must be rescued.
Mengsk refuses.
The zerg capture Kerrigan and take her to Char, where the Overmind transforms her into the Queen of Blades.
Why does Raynor leave Mengsk?
Tarsonis proves to Raynor that Mengsk’s revolution is no longer just a fight against Confederate abuses. Mengsk is now willing to use mass civilian casualties and sacrifice his own people to secure power.
Raynor leaves and eventually becomes one of the Dominion’s most persistent rebel enemies through Raynor’s Raiders.
What political result did Tarsonis produce?
With the Confederacy shattered, Mengsk declares a new order and creates the Terran Dominion. He positions himself as the leader who can restore security after the chaos.
That makes the battle both a military victory and a founding event for the Dominion.
For what happens next, continue with the Dominion timeline and Brood War.
