What was the Terran Confederacy?

The Terran Confederacy was one of the major human powers in the Koprulu Sector before the rise of the Terran Dominion. It controlled important colonies and maintained its political center on Tarsonis.

For Dominion history, the Confederacy matters because Arcturus Mengsk builds his revolution around opposition to it.

Why did Korhal rebel against the Confederacy?

Korhal challenged Confederate authority and declared independence. The Confederacy responded with nuclear bombardment that devastated the planet.

The destruction of Korhal becomes the central grievance behind Arcturus Mengsk and the Sons of Korhal. Mengsk turns personal loss and political resistance into a sector-wide revolutionary movement.

How did the Confederacy fall?

The decisive crisis comes when the zerg attack human worlds and the protoss begin intervening against infestation. Mengsk exploits the chaos and directs his forces against the Confederacy.

At Tarsonis, the Sons of Korhal use psi emitters to draw the zerg to the Confederate capital. The resulting catastrophe destroys the Confederacy’s ability to remain the dominant terran government.

Mengsk then presents himself as the leader capable of restoring order and establishes the Terran Dominion.

Is the Dominion just a renamed Confederacy?

No. The Dominion emerges from the collapse of the Confederacy and is led by the movement that fought it. But the two governments are connected by geography, institutions, military personnel, and the wider terran political order they inherit.

That tension is important to the StarCraft story: Mengsk begins as a revolutionary fighting an abusive government, then creates an authoritarian state of his own.
