Dominion Armed Forces
An overview of the Terran Dominion's military, from mass infantry and armored forces to fleets, Royal Guard elites, and covert units.
What are the Dominion Armed Forces?
The Dominion Armed Forces are the military institutions that defend and enforce the power of the Terran Dominion across the Koprulu Sector. Their forces include infantry, armored vehicles, aerospace units, capital ships, covert operatives, and specialized elite formations.
The exact organization varies across games, campaigns, and story eras, so this page treats “Dominion Armed Forces” as the umbrella for the Dominion’s major military arms rather than forcing every playable unit into one fixed order of battle.
What kinds of units does the Dominion use?
The Dominion draws on the broader terran military technology seen throughout StarCraft. Common battlefield elements include Marines, armored Siege Tanks, air support, and heavy capital ships such as the Battlecruiser.
Under Arcturus Mengsk, the setting also emphasizes conscription, propaganda, and the contrast between disposable rank-and-file troops and highly valued elite forces.
Blizzard’s Mengsk co-op design expresses that idea directly through Dominion Troopers and the Royal Guard.
What is the Royal Guard?
The Royal Guard is Mengsk’s elite personal fighting force. In co-op, its units are represented as veteran formations that grow stronger with battlefield experience. Named Royal Guard units include the Aegis Guard, Emperor’s Shadow, Shock Division, Blackhammer, Sky Fury, and Pride of Augustgrad.
Those names are useful for understanding Mengsk’s military fantasy, but their exact co-op mechanics should be read as gameplay design rather than automatically treated as universal campaign canon.
Where do Ghosts fit?
The Dominion also relies on psionic covert operatives. Nova Terra is one of the most prominent examples, and Nova Covert Ops puts Dominion intelligence, stealth operations, assassination, infiltration, and specialized equipment at the center of the story.
See the Dominion Ghost Program and Dominion Ghosts for that branch of the military.
How does the military change under Valerian?
After Arcturus dies, Valerian Mengsk inherits the Dominion and begins reforms. Blizzard’s StarCraft: Evolution preview specifically highlights military reforms, especially changes to the Ghost program, as part of Valerian’s effort to lead differently from his father.
For the political context behind those changes, follow the Dominion timeline and the Defenders of Man crisis.
